On Thursday morning, the Alicante Local Police Canine Unit visited the Hospital Pedagogical Unit (UPH) at the General University Hospital Doctor Balmis, where they conducted a demonstration for the hospitalised children, according to a statement from the Alicante City Council.
The Juanín Park, located on the fifth floor of the hospital, was chosen for this activity organised by the UPH and the Paediatrics service, in collaboration with the Alicante City Council. This event is part of the recreational and cultural programme developed during the school year to provide moments of leisure and learning for the young ones.
Two officers from the Local Police performed an outdoor demonstration in this park with two detection dogs, Kata and Jota, which sparked great enthusiasm among the children and their families.
During the demonstration, exercises were conducted that were adapted to the various ages of the students, focusing especially on object search. This showcased part of the work the officers do in training dogs for tasks such as searching for different substances.
Additionally, this specialised unit of the municipal force offered the children an educational talk about respect and animal protection, also sharing curiosities about breeds, canine olfactory functions, and other skills of these animals.
The day concluded with a heartwarming moment where the children could interact with the dogs, take photos, and enjoy a unique time, filling Juanín Park at the hospital with smiles.
