Alicante will once again experience a day of protest this Saturday, April 5. The Sindicat de Barri de Carolines and the Platforms for People Affected by Mortgages (PAH) in the province of Alicante have called for a demonstration for the right to housing.
The mobilization will start at 6:00 PM from Plaza Manila and will conclude at Plaza de la Muntanyeta. Under the slogan "Let's end the housing business," the city will join a protest that is simultaneously organized in more than 20 cities across Spain.
The organizers have emphasized that this call "responds to the growing difficulty of accessing decent housing in Alicante." From the Sindicat, they have stated that "the economic effort required from tenants in the city surpasses that of other major cities like Madrid or Barcelona." According to data from this entity, in the last five years, the rental price in the province of Alicante has increased by an average of 54%, reaching 12 euros per square meter in the capital, its historical maximum.
Therefore, they denounce that "this situation forces many people to live in cramped rooms, stay with relatives, move far from their environment, or, in the most extreme cases, resort to squatting or even sleep on the streets," they expressed in a statement.
From this entity, they also highlight that four out of ten homes in the province are second residences or are vacant, "indicating that there is a sufficient supply of unused homes. However, Alicante is the fourth city with the most evictions in the country, with an average of three to four evictions daily."
The convening groups denounce that access to housing has become an increasingly costly and precarious process. "Property owners enrich themselves at the expense of the suffering of many families, while the State allows real estate speculation and profitability at the expense of the right to housing," they claim.
These organizations have called for citizen mobilization and political organization to demand measures that improve access to housing.
