The frigid air mass that has entered the province has caused temperatures to plummet, recording even

-13 degrees in the early hours of Wednesday. In fact, this day has seen the lowest marks of the entire cold spell.

The cold has affected the entire province but has reached records in coastal areas, where even frosts have occurred, according to

the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) on its 'X' account. Orihuela, Elche, and Alicante have experienced temperatures close to 0 degrees.

The thermal drop has made the night from Tuesday to Wednesday the coldest in the last six years in the city of Alicante and surrounding areas. One has to go back to January 12, 2019, to see thermometers with a lower temperature than recorded this Wednesday.

According to Aemet data, the Alicante observatory recorded a minimum of 0.6 degrees Celsius in the early hours, while six years ago it reached 0 degrees, a mark that was nearly hit on a day that stood out as the coldest of the entire cold spell.

Although the coming days will not be as cold as this Wednesday, minimums of five to nine degrees are expected in the city of Alicante before the weekend, with highs of up to 16 degrees. The skies will no longer be clear and will bring rain, which

may be accompanied by storms and snow, as well as coastal phenomena this Friday, according to Aemet forecasts.

In fact, the agency explains that "a change in weather is expected tomorrow and announces that the early hours of this Thursday will remain cold, although less so than today." It is expected that the frosts, which will be mild, will move away from the coast towards the northern interior of the province.

The cold has settled after a weekend noted for being "very warm," with average temperatures typical of April, six degrees above usual. After that, there has been an accumulated drop of nine degrees, so "we are experiencing fully winter temperatures, three degrees below the normal for mid-January," explain Aemet.

Other records

The cold has spread equally across all the province's regions. "Frosts have occurred very close to the coast, especially on the Alicante coast," assures Aemet, highlighting sub-zero minimums in several points of the southern province, such as in Orihuela with -1.8 degrees or Rojales, at -0.5.

Thus, Aemet indicates that Orihuela, on that same January 12, 2019, presented a minimum of -2.4 degrees, while this Wednesday it was -1.8, the lowest since then. A similar situation to that of Rojales, although one has to go much further back in time to see these values on the thermometers.

According to Aemet data, the Rojales radar has marked minimums of -0.5 degrees, the lowest temperature since February 13, 2012, when the same figure was recorded. To find a lower value, one would have to go back to January 22, 2011, when thermometers reached -0.6 degrees.
