Alicante Debuts as Temporary Venue for the Prado Museum

Alicante is now, temporarily, a venue for the Prado Museum in Madrid. The exhibition 'The Prado in the Streets' was officially inaugurated this Tuesday on Constitution Avenue, during an event that gathered all the organisers.

After touring other parts of the region, the city of Alicante showcases fifty reproductions of the most important works from the national art gallery. Its first days on this central street have seen "massive" participation, according to the Culture Councillor, Antonio Peral.

The councillor was accompanied by the mayor Luis Barcala, the regional secretary of Culture, Pilar Tébar, and the president of the Iberdrola Spain Foundation, Jaime Alfonsín, the Communications Manager of the Prado Museum, Carlos Chaguaceda, and the General Education Coordination Management Technician of the art gallery, Fernando Pérez Suescun; along with members of the municipal corporation.

They all unveiled the poster that marks the beginning of this Prado Museum exhibition on Constitution Avenue in Alicante, which has been made possible thanks to its pedestrianisation, highlighted by Mayor Luis Barcala. "The heart of the city becomes a spectacular open-air museum for a month," featuring universal works housed in the national art gallery.

Thus, the strokes of Velázquez, Goya, Rubens, and Caravaggio, among other artists, are brought closer to the people of Alicante not only to showcase the permanent collection of the Prado Museum, but also to provide a journey through the history of Spain and Europe. This knowledge is expanded with QR codes that offer more information about each work and its time, as well as the different schools such as Spanish, Flemish, Italian, French, German, and Dutch.

The exhibition includes a nod to the city of Alicante and its main castle, which is reflected in the exhibition catalogue, illustrated by an exceptional piece by the Flemish master Robert Campin, titled 'Saint Barbara'.
