The new breakwater at Postiguet has once again sparked political controversy in Alicante. The project, executed by the Provincial Coastal Service of the Ministry for Ecological Transition, has faced criticism from Esquerra Unida Podem spokesperson Manolo Copé, who mocked the presence of loose stones on the beach after the work on social media.

The opposition councillor shared on social media the news first reported by TodoAlicante about the remnants of the old breakwater removal for the construction of the new one, with an ironic message.

Tweet from councillor Manolo Copé. TA

"The pebble spa experience returns to Postiguet! Thanks to the breakwater works, you can now exfoliate your feet with rocks for free. Another example of the PP's botched urban planning in Alicante. They neither care for the coastline nor respect the environment."

These statements were quickly addressed by the Government team through the Urban Planning Councillor, Rocío Gómez. The councillor reminded Copé that he can "forward the complaints he apparently has against the new breakwater executed at El Postiguet beach, which he has labelled on social media as 'botched urban planning', to the administration that carried them out and is therefore responsible: the central Government, through the Directorate General of Coasts."

As the councillor pointed out, the actions were carried out by the Ministry for Ecological Transition with the aim of improving the beach, through the removal of the old breakwater parallel to the coast and the construction of the new one, ensuring a stable beach width and over 200 new meters of sand.

In a statement, the popular councillor considered that "what is truly a botched job is having this left-wing opposition in Alicante City Council, which in its eagerness to criticise for the sake of criticism, does not even find out who executed the works they are talking about."

Gómez adds that "it is regrettable that we have to explain to the spokesperson of a municipal group in Alicante that the works on the breakwater at Postiguet are the responsibility of Costas and, therefore, fall under the central Government of Pedro Sánchez, which the left-wing parties, including his own, support along with the separatists who want to break up Spain."

The Urban Planning Councillor states that the municipal government team "appreciates all investments made in Alicante, regardless of who promotes them, and will not comment on these works." However, she indicates, "we invite Mr. Copé, socialist spokesperson Ana Barceló, and Compromís spokesperson Rafa Mas to forward any complaints they may have to their partners in the central Government."

Works completed ahead of schedule

The works on the new breakwater at the beach were completed on May 27, two months ahead of schedule. The project envisaged that the sand redistribution would occur naturally through wave action, although terrestrial means were also used to reposition some of the material accumulated behind the breakwater.

According to the technical document, "the sand relocation will be carried out from the dry beach towards the new sheltered area of the breakwater."

The project also included the commitment to remove all leftover materials, both from the old breakwater and the new work. However, users report that some of these remnants are still visible today.

The new breakwater not only prevents the sand loss that the Postiguet beach suffered but also allows for a gain of between 205 and 240 meters of stable surface. Additionally, it improves safety in the Cocó area and resolves other issues such as isolating the bathing area from the stormwater outlet located at the end of the beach, also improving water quality.
