Everything is set for Alicante to become the stage for meters next Sunday, February 2nd. Both starts will take place (9 and 9:30 am, respectively) on Foguerer José Romeu Zarandieta street -in front of the 'Pitíu' Rochel sports pavilion- and will finish on the newly renovated track of the 'Joaquín Villar' athletics stadium.
In the presentation held this Friday, Gallego was accompanied by Javier Sánchez, winner in 2018, second in 2019, and third in 2022. The councillor highlighted the 'demanding' nature of a race that 'values the two bastions of the city, Santa Bárbara and San Fernando.'
Sánchez, when analysing the race, explained that 'it is a unique race that, due to its toughness, becomes special. Even so, one enjoys the atmosphere in the streets. A defining moment is when descending from Santa Bárbara castle and seeing the large number of athletes preparing to start the ascent.'
Participants in the 10K will first face the ascent to San Fernando castle, then continue along Alfonso El Sabio Avenue and its extension, ascend to Santa Bárbara castle, Juan Bautista Lafora Avenue, Rambla de Méndez Núñez, Alfonso El Sabio, Estación, Salamanca, Condes de Soto, Doctor Rico Avenues, and the athletics stadium.
For the 5K, they will ascend San Fernando castle, descend to Alfonso El Sabio, circle Luceros Square, and continue along General Marvá, Salamanca, Condes de Soto Ameno, and Doctor Rico Avenues before reaching the finish line track.
With seventeen days to go until the start, nearly a thousand participants have already registered. This figure, according to the organisers, suggests that more than 1,500 participants from last year will be surpassed, 'confirming that the sporting event launched in 2013 has firmly established itself in the calendar, aiding in the de-seasonalisation of tourism.' 11.65% of registered participants so far are from outside the province of Alicante, and 7% hold a foreign passport.
Friday, January 31st: from 5 to 8 pm
Saturday, February 1st: from 11 am to 2 pm and from 5 to 8 pm
Sunday, February 2nd (race day): from 7 to 8:30 am.
Registrations can be completed on the website www.carreradeloscastillosalicante.com. The 10K costs 10 euros; the 5K, 8 euros. Dorsals can be collected at the 'Joaquín Villar' stadium, accessed via the main entrance on Hondón de las Nieves street.
