A mass of frigid air is sweeping across the peninsula, causing temperatures to plummet in Alicante province this Sunday. The Generalitat Valenciana's Emergency Coordination Centre warns of minimum temperatures of zero degrees on the Alicante coast and below zero inland. This episode will bring the harshest winter conditions next week, with potential for rain and snow.

Consequently, the Generalitat has requested the activation of emergency devices to assist the most vulnerable groups, such as the homeless. The Alicante City Council has arranged a special adverse weather operation for people sleeping rough from Sunday night, January 12, until Wednesday, January 15, inclusive. On Thursday morning, the extension of the service will be decided based on the weather's progression, according to municipal sources.

With this device, the City Council expands its capacity to accommodate the homeless, ensuring they have a place to sleep and eat during these days of expected low temperatures in Alicante. This involves reinforcing temporary accommodation spaces by opening the second gym of the Social Emergency and Reception Centre (Caus), located at Doctor Jiménez Díaz 27, allowing 50 more people to stay each night. These spaces add to the 69 permanent ones at CAUS.

The gym will be open from 8 PM to 8 AM to provide sleeping facilities with thermal insulation, sleeping bags, and blankets. Additionally, users will receive personalised hygiene kits. Breakfast, lunch (at 2 PM), and dinner services will also be provided.

Strengthening street assistance

Meanwhile, the Red Cross will enhance street assistance during these days through its Mobile Social Emergency Units (EMES), which provide on-site support to the homeless. In these routes, the Red Cross informs individuals about the CAUS opening to refer or transport those who wish to this resource.

Additionally, the Red Cross maintains its daily service through the Low Demand Intervention Centre (CIBE), a socio-sanitary resource that supports individuals with addictions, many of whom are in severe social exclusion. At this centre, located on Escultor Bañuls Street in Alicante, people can access breakfast services, receive emergency aid (including kits, blankets, sleeping bags, and warm clothing), and obtain advice, healthcare, psychological, and therapeutic support. The resource includes showers and laundry facilities.
