La plaza de la Santísima Faz de Alicante has turned into a 'set'. The City Council has installed a surveillance camera to combat vandalism in this area of the city. Uncivil behaviour has led to the destruction, on two occasions, of the monolith marking the start of the pilgrimage to the Relic.

This new equipment in the city transforms this central square, behind the Town Hall, into a sort of 'Callejeros' programme. Although the images are not public nor will they be broadcast, they will help to end the destruction of public facilities.

Last week, municipal sources explained to TodoAlicante the intention to place this camera after witnessing how the Santa Faz cross, the first station of the Penitential pilgrimage, had been vandalised for the second time in just two years.

Thus, this new surveillance system is now operational and monitors every step in this central square to prevent such acts from occurring. Among other misdeeds recorded in recent weeks, the appearance of excrement smeared on the main door of the Alicante Town Hall stands out.

The Deputy Mayor of Alicante, Manuel Villar, clarified this Tuesday that this action carried out by the Department of Security has been executed "in accordance with the law," following accusations made by the socialist municipal group.

With this camera, the Alicante City Council intends to prevent such vandal acts and also proceed to identify the perpetrators "directly," thanks to the recording of any type of incident. Regarding the current investigation, Villar emphasised that "as soon as something is known," they will go to the Justice to report the damage to the cross.

Replacement of the Santa Faz cross

After last week's damage, the Alicante City Council has already contacted a company specialising in this type of monument to obtain a budget and proceed with the repair of the vandalised Santa Faz cross.

The municipal intention is to replace the monolith "as quickly as possible," Villar noted, although "I think we already have experience in how long it takes to do it." He referred to the work carried out in 2023 when a new cross had to be commissioned due to the impossibility of repairing the breaks in the original.
