Alicante and sports go hand in hand. The transformation of San Juan Beach into a sports super space is getting closer every day. The City Council has pre-awarded the company Vías y Construcciones S.A the installation of four modules on Niza Avenue to provide changing rooms, storage, and an information point, as well as a shaded outdoor area for training. This action will be carried out in parallel with the comprehensive redevelopment of the promenade, between Ireland Street and the border with El Campello, executed by the same company, according to the Alicante City Council.

This project, which went out to tender at the end of September with a base budget of 1,868,929 euros, includes the installation of four prefabricated module units, two of which will be used as changing rooms with a minimum capacity of six people and a maximum of 12 people with toilets and showers, another for storing nautical sports equipment such as kayaks, SUPs, oars, and general beach sports equipment, and a fourth module for information and toilets. A shaded outdoor area for various training activities will also be created, according to the City Council.

This improvement of the sports facilities on San Juan Beach, which were also renovated months ago in the sand area, will be carried out in an area currently used for parking, near the intersection with Milan Street, where the summer craft market was located before its relocation to the beginning of the promenade.

The Sports Councillor, Toni Gallego, has reiterated the municipal interest in "offering athletes who regularly come to San Juan Beach to practice all kinds of disciplines complementary facilities such as changing rooms, services, information office, storage, lockers, or training areas, which will become an additional incentive for sports practice in this area."

Service areas and meeting point

The project includes, after the redevelopment, creating shaded areas and pergolas to establish a meeting point, activity area, and outdoor training space. The new service area will have an information and customer service point, also generating a space with hygienic services for users.

San Juan Beach is a regular venue for sports such as beach volleyball, surfing, (SUP) paddle surfing, windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, beach soccer, rowing, or paddle tennis, among others. It is common to hold championships and events that attract a large number of athletes and the general public, all with the support of the Sports Department, as well as various associations and sports clubs.

The project promoters, Urban Planning and Sports, have also shown interest in enhancing vegetation compatible with the climate and low water consumption in the promenade gardens, as well as optimising the existing bike lane alongside the area of action. Simultaneously, a redesign and relocation of pedestrian crossings connecting with the coastal promenade and the beach in this area will be observed, as well as the implementation of pavements that comply with accessibility regulations.

The installation of sports modules complements the rehabilitation project of the last phase of the promenade, between Ireland Street and the municipal boundary of El Campello, currently underway. The primary objective of this action is to provide a unified treatment to the promenade's design and improve the comfort of its many users. This is the last section that remained to be redeveloped and conditioned on San Juan Beach.
