The Alicante City Council reaffirmed its commitment on Tuesday to the fight against cancer and support for those affected by the disease, as well as the associations working to improve their quality and hope of life. Mayor Luis Barcala and several members of the municipal corporation participated in an event organized by the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) in the Town Hall Square, commemorating World Cancer Day on February 4th.

Barcala stated that once again, the people of Alicante show their absolute support for the initiative and the actions of the AECC: "We join and advocate with you for more prevention, early diagnosis, better healthcare, and greater support for patients and their families," emphasized the mayor.

"In this fight, you are not alone; we are all absolutely involved because cancer affects us all," pointed out Barcala, highlighting the importance of the work done by the AECC and other cancer associations. Their efforts and advocacy "bear fruit and have achieved more awareness, more prevention, early diagnosis, better treatments, and higher recovery rates." The mayor also congratulated research teams, institutions, public administrations, and all those who, through public-private collaboration, provide resources for prevention and diagnosis. "We are all essential to achieve the ultimate goal, which is the cure for cancer," he concluded.

The president of the Spanish Association Against Cancer in Alicante, Fermín Crespo, read a manifesto emphasizing that cancer is "one of the socio-health problems facing Spain and the world." In 2024, a total of 290,411 people were diagnosed with cancer in Spain, with 12,081 in the province of Alicante, according to data provided by Crespo, who projected that by 2030, there will be 317,000 new cancer cases in Spain, equating to one diagnosis every 1.8 minutes.

To curb these figures, on World Cancer Day 2025, the AECC and 23 other entities launched the first open data space on cancer, 'More Cancer Data', which organizes key indicators around the cancer patient's journey, from health promotion, primary prevention, early detection, diagnosis, healthcare, follow-up, and even end-of-life care. Crespo highlighted that "the lack of an integral and global cancer knowledge model, difficulty accessing data, or lack of data homogeneity hinders the development of effective health strategies, leading to higher survival rates and quality of life for patients."

Therefore, "cancer entities demand prioritizing data collection and making it accessible, advocating for the role of civil society in creating a social applied research ecosystem in cancer, and calling for the creation of a joint coordination commission," highlighted the president of the AECC in Alicante. "We need everyone's commitment to surpass a 70% survival rate by 2030," he noted.
