The Urban Planning Councillor of l'Alfàs del Pi, Toni Such, announced this Thursday the 'imminent' commencement of improvement works on the Camí Vell d'Altea, known locally as the 'tourist route', which links Benidorm with l'Albir.

The project, budgeted at just over 850,000 euros, is '100% funded by European funds' and will enhance 'mobility, capacity, and also safety' on a road that sees a significant amount of car traffic sharing space with bicycles, pedestrians, and increasingly, personal mobility vehicles.

The government spokesperson also emphasised that 'we are very pleased to announce the imminent start of the works'. He highlighted that 'we have been working for a long time to execute this project', as it is of 'vital importance and continues many proposals included in the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan of l'Alfàs del Pi'.

The aim of these works, affecting the road section between the roundabout near the Benidorm trinquet and the entrance to the urban area of l'Albir, is, according to Such, 'to allow better pedestrian and cyclist transit, not only on this specific road but throughout the entire municipality'. Additionally, given the road's connecting nature, 'it will also improve connections with other municipalities in the region'.

Toni Such also clarified that as the works progress, a second phase is planned in the same area, which includes the installation of state-of-the-art LED lighting, with regulation and control systems adapted to the needs of the entire tourist route.

'We are talking about an investment of 109,457.55 euros to equip a new clean urban transport infrastructure with the necessary lighting for its use, also 100% funded by European funds', the Urban Planning Councillor emphasised.

In addition to the mentioned improvement in road lighting, the project will extend the planned bike lane from Benidorm and connect with the l'Alfàs cycle path by creating 860 metres of bike lane. Furthermore, sidewalks will be constructed on both sides of the road, creating pedestrian routes to serve those walking to the campsite located on the same road.

Additionally, vehicle circulation on this road, which directly links to Benidorm and serves as the main entry route to l'Albir via the new alternative access from the N-332, will be improved.
