The Valencian Community has experienced nearly inextinguishable forest fires in recent years, termed 'sixth generation'. The heat and the tinderbox nature of our forests ignite fires that are unpredictable, violent, and carry an unknown energy load. The latest ones, in Vall d'Ebo in Marina Alta and Bejís in Alto Palancia. The third episode of Red Alert analyses these uncontrollable firestorms on Monday, January 27 at 10:45 PM.

The new episode of the programme, which highlights the effects of the climate emergency in the Valencian Community, examines the characteristics of the fires that have broken out in recent years and the link between climate change and their behaviour. With participation from À Punt's meteorology team, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), and members of various fire brigades, the show reflects on the state of our mountains and changes in firefighting strategies.

Continuous drought, land abandonment, and vegetation proliferation have turned forest areas into a powder keg ready to ignite at any moment. Climate change has fostered these conditions and the increase in such fires.

The programme, thanks to historical archives, reviews the major fires that the Valencian Community has suffered over the past 35 years and shows how control methods have changed. Among the fires recalled are those from the first week of July 1994, when 13 people died and over 100,000 hectares burned. On that occasion, a heatwave caused a black week with 14 fires starting in Teruel and spreading through the province of Castellón and then Valencia.

This episode will also feature testimonies from affected residents and images showing how the media's way of reporting these events has changed.

Red Alert is a four-part documentary series produced by À Punt that analyses climate changes using the archives of Canal 9 and À Punt. The programme is presented by Mathies Muñoz and directed by Carmesina Franch.
