Alejandro Blanco will continue to lead the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) at least until the first half of 2029. The Galician leader has been elected for the sixth consecutive time as president of the national Olympic body, during the Extraordinary General Assembly held this Wednesday at the Olympic entity's headquarters in Madrid.
Alejandro Blanco received overwhelming support from the assembly members, with 95% of the votes in favour, allowing him to continue a leadership that began on 30 September 2005 and will extend until the first half of 2029.
"Thank you all for trusting me once again. It is an honour and a responsibility to continue leading the house of sport and athletes. We will keep working with the same enthusiasm, effort, and dedication so that our athletes and federations have all the necessary support to keep Spain's name at the top of the international scene," stated Alejandro Blanco after his presidency at the COE was confirmed.
With this re-election, Alejandro Blanco embarks on a new term in which he will continue to work for the advancement of Spanish sport, the promotion of Olympic values, the benefit of national athletes, and the preparation for the Milano Cortina 2026 and Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games as main sporting objectives.
Graduated in Physical Sciences from the University of Valladolid, a city he moved to from his native Orense to train in the sports field before starting his career as an executive in various institutions related to the world of sports, Alejandro Blanco chose judo as his sport, reached the 8th DAN black belt, and served as a coach and referee before holding the position of president of the Judo and Associated Sports Federation of Castilla y León from 1985 to 1993, the year he went on to lead the Spanish Judo and Associated Sports Federation. In 2005, he became the seventeenth president of the COE, being re-elected as the sole candidate in 2009, 2013, 2017, and 2021.
