In the context of the War of Spanish Succession, the city of Alcoy surrendered to the Bourbon troops on January 9, 1708. This Thursday marks the 317th anniversary of this event, and the city council has decided to organize a tribute for all those who lost their lives in the battle.

This tribute will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday in Ramón y Cajal Square, where a commemorative plaque of these events is installed. There will be a floral offering as well as music from the Colla La Cordeta.

At that time, the city of Alcoy endured a siege for more than half a year by the Bourbon troops, recalls the Councillor for Culture, Elisa Guillem. "Finally, many people from Alcoy died defending the city, which led to the surrender and occupation of Alcoy. Additionally, its defender and head of the volunteer militia, Francesc Perera, was executed."

Guillem encourages citizens to participate in this tribute, as a "demonstration of our remembrance of the history of the city of Alcoy and our recognition of those who defended it so many years ago."
