Alcoi is beginning to dress up for the celebrations. The town has commenced the installation and assembly of the grand castle, which will serve as the epicentre of the Moors and Christians festival dedicated to Sant Jordi next April.
The City Council is in a hurry and aims to have the structure erected before April 1st, the day when the festival's announcement poster, created by artist Ximo Canet, will be unveiled.
The castle is one of the most iconic infrastructures of the festivities, and as such, it has undergone various restorations and a repainting process to restore its original colour from over 125 years ago.
This operation was carried out in coordination with the San Jorge Association, and the chosen tone has been officially registered for future interventions, thus ensuring the preservation of the festive monument.
Another repainting will be done for the Enramada for the 2026 Moors and Christians festival in Alcoi, marking the 750th anniversary of Sant Jordi. This will be one of the improvements to ensure a "more efficient and durable" installation, explained the Councillor for Festivals, Jordi Martínez.
Thus, in addition to assembling the Moors and Christians castle, Alcoi is also preparing to adorn its streets with the Enramada. The work will begin next Monday, March 17th, with the 19 sections of the Plaza de España, where the 259 battlements have been renewed.
The materials for this ornamentation have been replaced with lighter, safer, and more durable ones, according to the City Council, which has also allowed a weight reduction of 3,000 kilos with an individual reduction of 8.2 kilos per battlement.
In total, 144 sections of Enramada will be installed, beautifying the streets of the centre where the various festival events take place, ensuring they shine in all their splendour.
March 17th: Plaça d'Espanya (19 sections)
March 18th to 20th: Sant Nicolau and Sant Llorenç streets (38 sections)
March 23rd: Sant Jordi, Sant Francesc, Pintor Casanova, Sant Miquel, and L'Escola streets (26 sections)
March 24th: Mossén Torregrossa, Sant Tomàs, Sant Blai, and Gonçal Barrachina streets (20 sections)
March 25th and 26th: Sant Llorenç street, País Valencià Avenue, and Pintor Casanova street (41 sections)
The City Council reminds that the Local Police will be placing warning signs to indicate parking prohibitions in each section affected by the assembly.
