Alcoi is not standing idly by in the face of the surge in serious traffic accidents the city is experiencing. Last year alone, there were 276 accidents resulting in two deaths and 65 injuries, six of which were serious.
“We are witnessing a worrying increase in accidents linked to inattention and the consumption of alcohol and drugs at the wheel,” explains Alcoi's Security Councillor, Raül Llopis, who announced that the City Council will strengthen controls from 2025 and implement measures to calm traffic in the city.
The Alcoi council echoes a municipal report stating that inattention at the wheel was the most common cause of accidents, accounting for 29.32% of cases. This is followed by lack of safety measures (22.09%), intoxication (7.23%), and pedestrian accidents (7.23%). Speeding, distraction, and lane invasion also contributed to road accidents.
The day of the week with the most accidents was Thursday, followed by Monday and Friday. Regarding the times, the highest number of accidents occurred between 12:00 and 16:00, with 72 accidents recorded.
The neighborhoods most affected by accidents were Ensanche (74 accidents), Zona Norte (70), and Santa Rosa (32). Regarding pedestrian accidents, Avenida Hispanitat (3 cases), Els Alçamora, and Arquebisbe Domenech were some of the most dangerous spots.
“We are going to reinforce surveillance and signage in areas with the highest number of accidents, especially in black spots where more pedestrian accidents have occurred,” assured Llopis.
