Alberto Olmos Serrano joins the ranks of journalists and literary professionals who, since 1980, have been honoured with the Afundación International Journalism Prize Julio Camba. This award is designed to recognise the quality of literary and opinion articles published in renowned Spanish-language publications. The prize includes a monetary award of 10,000 euros and a statuette of journalist Julio Camba, inspired by a caricature by Siro López. This edition was the most attended in history, with over 241 entries from 18 countries, marking an 80% increase in participation compared to last year, solidifying the prize's international appeal, which boasts a roster of award-winning signatures from the Spanish press.

The award ceremony took place at the Casa de América in Madrid during a gala broadcast live on Afundación TV. It was attended by representatives from major journalist collectives in the city and Spain, previous award winners, renowned Spanish and Latin American writers and journalists, and professionals from the cultural and academic sectors.

The jury of the XLV Afundación Julio Camba International Prize, whose decision was announced by the president of Abanca's Social Work, Miguel Ángel Escotet, praised 'Madrid se viene abajo: vivir en el cuarto de las fregonas' for its 'relevance and thematic pertinence, which, with a very high literary quality style, finds the humorous tone that offers a counterpoint to a social issue of current relevance.' Finalists included Natalia Junquera Añón (A Coruña) for her article in El País titled 'Eternally Young'; and Eileen Truax (Mexico City) for her piece 'Define White. Define Black. Define Latino,' published in Revista 5W.

This year's jury was chaired by writer and RAE academic José María Merino, with Isaac González Toribio, Abanca's Communications Director, serving as secretary. The panel included journalist and writer Cristina Sánchez Andrade, director of the Gabo Foundation Jaime Abello Banfi, writer and veterinarian María Sánchez, winner of the 2024 edition, and writer and journalist Ramón Pernas. Following their majority decision, the jury emphasised the extraordinary quality of all the competing texts.

During his speech, Juan Carlos Escotet Rodríguez, president of Abanca and trustee of Afundación, stated that 'this award is a worthy effort to revisit the immense value of Camba and, at the same time, honour the excellence of literary and opinion journalism.' He also asserted that 'Camba's relevance has grown' over time, as demonstrated by 'the notable trajectory of this prize, the numerous titles and successive editions, and the speed with which his name is invoked when the time comes — as it always does — to speak of the great journalists in the Spanish language of the 20th century.'
