Good news for Aitana Bonmatí and the Spanish national team. The footballer has been discharged from the hospital three days after being admitted, following a favourable response to the medical treatment administered by doctors to tackle the viral meningitis she was diagnosed with last Friday.

The double Ballon d'Or winner must continue with the prescribed treatment, with doctors closely monitoring her progress in hopes that she can rejoin the team in the coming days. It is certain that she will not travel this afternoon with the rest of the squad to Lausanne, Switzerland, where Montse Tomé's team will have their base.

Although there is optimism within the team, Aitana remains doubtful for the Women's Euro 2020, which begins on the 3rd of July for Spain. Aitana had been experiencing high fevers for two days without any apparent explanation, leading to her transfer to a medical centre for hospital monitoring and various medical tests, which eventually diagnosed her with viral meningitis, for which medication has now been prescribed.

Spain will debut in the Euro 2020 against Portugal in the group stage on Thursday, July 3rd. Four days later, on Monday the 7th, they will face Belgium and will conclude the group stage against Italy on July 11th. Should they qualify, the quarter-finals will be held between July 16th and 18th.

Deadline, until July 2nd

The Spanish team has until 24 hours before their debut to decide whether to replace Aitana. Typically, most people recover from viral meningitis within 7 to 10 days, meaning the footballer could be fit to play almost the entire Euro 2020.

According to Article 57.04 of the UEFA Competition Regulations, "in the event that registered players or goalkeepers suffer serious injuries or illnesses, they may only be replaced if both the team doctor and a UEFA Medical Committee doctor confirm that the injury or illness is severe enough to prevent participation in the final tournament."
