PSOE of Alicante will present a unified list at the Valencian socialists' congress, where a boost will be given to the Minister of Science, Diana Morant, as the party leader in the Community next week amidst national and regional political uncertainty. This was the directive sent to all levels of leadership, and Alicante has complied, avoiding a vote.
The socialist factions have agreed on a delegate distribution based on the percentage from the last assemblies. Thus, the majority faction, led by Ángel Franco, takes half of the delegates. They have also decided on the symbolic number one: Quico Fenollar will lead the delegation. The former mayor of Alcoleja is being introduced into the group with an eye on the 2027 municipal elections, giving him prominence in top-level organizational meetings, such as the PSPV congress.
The rest of the socialist sectors also have representation, albeit minor. Both those close to the PSPV president and provincial secretary-general, Alejandro Soler, and those most aligned with former deputy mayor Eva Montesinos. The current secretary-general of Alicante's socialists, Miguel Millana, has been left out.
The battle for party leadership in Alicante, and the province, will have to wait for another occasion. First comes the PSPV congress, to be held in Valencia from January 30 to February 2. Diana Morant will be re-elected as the general secretary of the Valencian socialists, a position she assumed a year ago at the extraordinary congress held in Benicàssim following Ximo Puig's resignation. Morant was the only candidate for the position and has thus been appointed.
Next week's congress will not only serve to proclaim Diana Morant as general secretary. It will also be a rallying point around the current minister and the general secretary, Pedro Sánchez, after the government lost the vote in Congress this week on the 'omnibus' decree, which included pension revaluation and urban transport aid, as well as assistance for those affected by the storm.
Officials consulted by TodoAlicante believe that "it is not the time to open battles, but to stand united in defense of Pedro Sánchez and the socialist project." Alicante's socialists have understood the situation, and the agreement reached this Friday, which will be ratified in assembly on Sunday, will position the largest PSOE group in the Community as a significant pillar of the PSPV.
