The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) unveiled its new corporate image and Strategic Plan 2025-2029 on Tuesday, which includes doubling its investment over the next four years and strengthening its workforce by incorporating new profiles, with a particular focus on communication. The Agency, with an annual budget of approximately 134 million euros, currently employs around 1,200 workers, but has lost 25% of its staff in recent years.
Aemet's president, María José Rallo, explained that the new plan is structured around six pillars (society, services, development, technology, organization, and talent) and contains over a hundred specific measures, "many of them technical in nature, but with increased importance in all matters related to communication," Rallo specified at an event where the Agency presented its new corporate image, a logo reminiscent of isobar maps over the profile of a map of Spain.
Rallo emphasized that today it is not enough to "understand" science; it must also be explained. In this regard, she highlighted the importance of communication and noted that Aemet's website is the most visited among all state agencies, pointing out that last March it broke its record with an average of 21.5 million daily visits.
The Strategic Plan began development in June 2024 and was approved by Aemet's Governing Council in March 2025. According to Rallo, the plan aims to provide "better meteorological and climate forecasts" and offer a service more tailored "to the needs of each user" and "to the reality that is to come," marked by adverse weather phenomena "that will become increasingly extreme and frequent due to climate change."
In her address, Rallo highlighted further challenges, such as technological transformation, and made it clear that the "mission" of the state agency does not change with this new plan. "Aemet's mission is to contribute to saving lives and protecting property."
At the same event, the Secretary of State for the Environment, Hugo Morán, acknowledged the work of the "Aemet professionals" in this Strategic Plan. "We are the communicators who demonstrate that a country, a robust country, a country that trusts in its future, is a country that places its trust in public services, and our duty is to ensure that these public services improve day by day," Morán stated.
