The Aemet Forecasts Weather for Hogueras

Alicante is already buzzing to the rhythm of music, and the scent of gunpowder fills every corner of the city. This Friday, designer Rubén Hernández kicked off the festivities with the proclamation delivered from the Town Hall square.

With the countdown underway for the main days of the Fiesta, the State Meteorological Agency has already included in its predictions the weather until the end of June. However, the forecast is not very promising for the people of Alicante.

Starting with the good news: there is no forecast of rain during the Hogueras week. Although rain is not common in June, it is one of the greatest fears of the foguerers due to the effect it has on the monuments. Water damages the cork heart of the ninots and softens the paint, creating cracks and ruining the finishes of the fogueres.

However, Aemet predicts another of the most feared effects by the people of Alicante during the Hogueras days: the heat. Both the week of June 16 to 22 and the week of June 23 to 29 will be warmer than usual for this time of year. Temperatures will be between one and three degrees above what is typical for these dates in the province.

So, if the forecast holds, this year the essential accessories to enjoy the mascletà will be a straw hat and a fan.

But until the Hogueras arrive, temperatures will also be very high. During the next week, from June 9 to 15, thermometers will reach 40 degrees in parts of the southern Iberian Peninsula. However, the province will stay away from these extreme highs, although in the south it will come close to 35 degrees on Thursday.

The province of Alicante is approaching truly summer-like weather this week, with highs above 30 degrees throughout the week and some particularly hot days. For example, Orihuela will reach 34 degrees on Thursday and Villena 33 on Tuesday. The skies will remain clear, and no rain is expected.
