At 238 Kilometres Per Hour

In 2024, traffic authorities detected over 1,100 drivers exceeding speed limits significantly, including one who surpassed the limit by nearly 120 kilometres on the A-7 motorway.

Last year, the radars of the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) recorded over one thousand one hundred drivers travelling at speeds nearly 120 kilometres per hour above the legal limit on interurban roads. Many were brought before the court for potentially committing a traffic safety offence. Most of these significant speed violations were captured by road-installed radars, as well as the Pegasus radar from helicopters patrolling the roads.

In the videos provided by the DGT, one can see a driver travelling at 238 kilometres per hour on the A-7, exceeding the maximum allowed speed by 118 km since the road limit at that point is 120 km. The driver performed illegal overtakes, ignoring road signs. The offence was captured by a helicopter camera operator, an officer from Valencia, who contacted the Traffic Operations Centre to have a patrol provide support from the road to stop and identify the driver. The patrol stopped and identified the driver, who faces a charge of reckless driving, punishable by up to two years in prison and a driving ban of up to six years.

Another video shows a driver travelling at 206 kilometres per hour on a section of the N-610 conventional road connecting Palencia with Benavente, limited to 90 km, who had fled a preventive control in Valladolid. He was eventually located by the Zamora Traffic patrols, charged with a traffic safety offence for driving a motor vehicle exceeding the maximum allowed speed by more than 80 kilometres.

The third video features a motorcyclist travelling at 185 km/h on a road section limited to 80 km when detected by the Traffic helicopter at kilometre 1,077 of the Mediterranean Motorway A-7. The driver has been investigated and brought before the court for a suspected traffic safety offence, exceeding the maximum speed limit by more than 105 km/h.

Finally, another driver is seen travelling at an average speed of 192 kilometres per hour, peaking at 198 kilometres on a conventional road, the N-611, limited to 90. In this case, the camera operator in the helicopter captured the violation from the air and contacted the Traffic Operations Centre to have a Palencia patrol provide support from the road to stop and identify the driver.

Inappropriate Speed in Accidents

In 2024, inappropriate speed was present in 21% of road accidents. The DGT urges all drivers to respect speed limits, thereby helping to save lives and reduce road casualties.

Traffic authorities remind that maintaining an appropriate speed could prevent a quarter of fatalities in road accidents and that there is a strong correlation between speed and accident risk, as well as between speed and the severity of injuries resulting from an accident.

According to a study by the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC), if average speeds decreased by just 1 km/h on all roads in the European Union, it is estimated that 2,200 road deaths could be prevented each year.
