Clear skies and rising temperatures signal the arrival of summer, a favourite season for motorcyclists. From daily commutes to weekend getaways and long-distance journeys, motorcycles become the ideal vehicle for any trip during this time.
However, the heat poses certain risks for motorcyclists, encouraging less protective gear and underestimating potential consequences. It is crucial to pay attention to details, such as equipment, the motorcycle itself, and the rider's habits. Common sense is paramount, and beyond these ten rules to ease your ride in the heat, it's important to drive cautiously, avoid strict schedules, and not speed. The priority is always to reach your destination safely. Preventive driving is your best ally, and maintaining a larger safety margin to react to unforeseen events is essential, especially when high temperatures can affect your riding.
- Always avoid riding a motorcycle or scooter in shorts, a short-sleeved shirt, or flip-flops. Even minor falls can have serious consequences if you're not adequately protected. A full-face helmet is always safer than an open-face one, even if the latter seems cooler.
- Avoid riding during the hottest hours. It may seem obvious, but it's important to avoid the peak heat of the day, between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM, when the heat can be overwhelming and complicate motorcycle riding. If travelling, it's better to start early and take advantage of the cooler parts of the day.
- Avoid heavy meals that can cause drowsiness. Obviously, avoid alcoholic beverages as they impair your abilities, increase the risk of accidents, and lead to dehydration.
- Rest and stretch your legs every hour and a half or 200 km. This advice applies year-round, but it's even more relevant in summer. If you can align these breaks with refuelling stops, you'll be more efficient.
- Always hydrate at every stop, even if you don't feel very thirsty. Water is recommended, but isotonic drinks or juices are also suitable, especially if you feel slightly fatigued.
- Don't forget sunglasses, an essential item for sunny days. While many helmets come with built-in retractable visors, it's better to use polarised sunglasses for better optical quality. Not all sunglasses fit comfortably inside a helmet, so choose ones that are compatible.
- Always use specific summer gear. There is a wide range of products available, mainly jackets and gloves, made with mesh or micro-perforated fabrics that enhance ventilation and breathability, reducing the sensation of heat. Some helmets also have better airflow systems to keep your head cool.
- Always carry sunscreen. When taking breaks and removing your helmet and jacket, sun exposure can harm your face or arms.
- Be cautious when approaching a hot motorcycle if you're still in short sleeves or shorts. Parts like the exhaust pipe can cause burns upon contact. If you have a passenger, advise them on how to mount and dismount the motorcycle and warn them about hot areas.
- Lastly, ensure your motorcycle is in perfect condition before setting off. In the heat, a mechanical breakdown can be a nightmare. If you're not handy, visit your mechanic for a thorough inspection before embarking on a journey.
