The motorcycle and light vehicle sector is experiencing a very prosperous period. After closing last December with a total of 24,461 registrations, representing a 75.5% increase, and combined with the positive figures from the rest of 2024, this leads to a total of 247,927 sales, indicating a 10% growth compared to 2023, according to figures from the National Association of Two-Wheel Sector Companies (Anesdor).
The positive data has been mainly influenced by the transition to Euro5+ homologation stage and, to a lesser extent, by vehicle acquisitions in areas affected by the DANA.
"The results from last December were extraordinary, significantly boosting the entire year's outcomes. On one hand, the DANA prompted exceptional registrations, but above all, the transition to the Euro emissions stage from this January has necessitated many self-registrations. These positive effects on December's data will weigh down the figures for the first months of 2025," details José María Riaño, general secretary of Anesdor.
"From this January, only motorcycles and light vehicles of the Euro 5+ stage can be registered. This new Euro stage for the L category of homologation, distinct and not equivalent to the Euro 5 for cars, is not included in the environmental label regulation, necessary for access to Low Emission Zones. Therefore, it is urgent for the DGT to update the regulation and classify these vehicles appropriately, considering their environmental impact is even lower than that of cars with an ECO label," he adds.
Considering these facts, by markets, motorcycles grew by 70.3% in December (10,632 units); mopeds ended December positively, with a total of 1,534 registrations (64.4%). The business channel experienced significant growth in both motorcycles and mopeds due to self-registrations prompted by the Euro Stage change: motorcycles grew by 421.6% (7,809 units) and mopeds by 182.6% (421 units).
Regarding other L category vehicles, tricycles ended December with negative data, showing a 19.4% decline (224 units), while heavy and light quadricycles ended positively with a growth of 42.1% (385 units) and 43.6% (405 units) respectively.
As for the year-end, in 2024, motorcycles accumulated a total of 222,105 units (11.5% growth), with the private channel being predominant with 187,059 registrations (10.6% growth). In terms of engine sizes, motorcycles up to 125 cc accumulated a total of 115,389 units (a 7.1% increase), medium-sized motorcycles (up to 750 cc) totaled 68,455 units (a 16% increase), and large motorcycles (over 750 cc) recorded 38,261 units (an 18.6% growth).
By type of use, scooters accumulated the highest volume of registrations with a total of 117,126 units (over 6%), followed by road motorcycles with 94,116 units (17.1% increase) and off-road motorcycles with 10,719 units (over 31.6%).
Mopeds ended the year 2024 negatively with a total of 13,463 units (an 8.4% decline), with the private channel achieving the best results, totaling 10,749 units (a 4% increase).
Regarding other light vehicles, tricycles ended the year negatively with a 7.3% decline (3,744 units), while light and heavy quadricycles ended positively with 3,579 units (a 3.6% increase) and 5,036 units (22.2% increase) respectively.
